Seyed Sabah Zangeneh, speaking to the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations on US policy to undermine Turkey’s ability to deal with the Zionist regime, given its green light on Turkey’s invasion of northeast Syria, said: “A key US foreign policy principle is political, military, security and industrial supremacy against all other countries in the region; if the supremacy is normal and countries cannot challenge it, the US will have no problem otherwise the alarm will be sounded and the US will carry out a series of successive measures.”

“This policy will definitely apply to all countries in the region, as it did to Iraq and Syria, and they have practically weakened the two countries militarily, politically and economically,” he said. Now it may be Turkey’s turn, and maybe in the future, there will be a draw in the name of Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, one should consider whether abandoning the Syrian Kurds as American allies will hurt American politics or Turkey, which has long-standing and strategic ties with the United States, the analyst said. It seems that the US does not care about tarnishing its image with regard to its treatment of Syrian Kurds and abandoning them, even if it seems to have endorsed Turkey’s incursion into Syrian territory.

“On the other hand, however, the United States has put both the Kurds in serious danger and Turkey into a wasp nest that will be very difficult to get rid of.”

Zanganeh said although US-Turkish strategic relations are still favored by Washington, but Erdogan has taken some actions whereby he has prepared the ground for the US to punish him. Among Erdogan’s actions was purchase of 400-S missiles from Russia which was regarded crossing the red line for a NATO member state; in addition, his efforts to expand its territorial domain and later the Mediterranean gas dispute with Israel being behind it sparked US criticism. The Zionist regime seeks to connect gas extracted from the Mediterranean in its offshore region to Cyprus and from there to Europe. So it will be a threat to Turkey which is trying to gain a share of the vast resources of Mediterranean gas. So here again, there is a trace of the Zionist regime.

Zangeneh added that Turkey could have had a very decisive position if it could have pursued its plans more prudently, in which case neither the US nor the Zionist regime nor even Russia could have easily threatened its interests, but that authority is declining. For example, in the field of economy Ankara is faced with higher debts compared to GNP and budget deficit and depreciation of Turkish lira and has lost much of its support for political and geopolitical goals.

He said the current situation is very fragile for Turkey, stressing that Turkey in the regional dimension may lose the ability to gain the trust of important regional actors with the problems it has created in regional relations. This will have a serious impact on Turkey’s potential and future.
