Redefining and Strengthening the Discourse of Resistance Against the West’s Deviant Narrative-Building

Online Strategic Council - Interview: A strategic studies researcher stated that following rapid regional developments and extensive wars in Gaza and Ukraine, the arena of discourse-building in West Asia and beyond has entered a new stage.

Seyed Mahdi Nikfar, in an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, stated: “These developments have taken on a cultural and perceptual nature more than a military or security one.” He said that the recent wars have “altered the world’s discursive and visual order, and the discourse of resistance, as one of the most important alternative narratives against the dominant Western narrative, has been able to gain a new position.” Nikfar added: “The experience of the Gaza war showed that in the age of communication, nations are no longer merely passive audiences of mainstream media but have themselves become producers of meaning and image. Iran, by focusing on the discourse of resistance and the pursuit of independence, has been able to become, in this semantic field, the axis for redefining the global perspective on justice, freedom, and human dignity.”

The strategic studies researcher said: “The two-year Gaza war, even if it ends with the recent agreement, has effectively been etched into global and historical memory, transcended the geographical boundaries of resistance, and awakened many conscious minds in the West.” He reminded that “in the context of the ongoing crisis in Palestine, even mainstream Western media were forced to use terms such as ‘genocide,’ ‘occupation,’ and ‘historical injustice’—terms that until recently had no place in their official discourse. This lexical gap is a sign of the gradual collapse of the West’s monopoly on narrative-building.”

Strategies to Counter Western Narrative-Building
In another part of his remarks, the researcher emphasized: “The most important weapon of the West in the current era is not bombs and missiles, but narrative. The West, by utilizing media institutions, research centers, and even digital entertainment, tries to portray resistance as a factor of instability and violence. In the face of this trend, the strategy of Iran and like-minded countries should be based on three pillars: ‘representing the truth on the ground,’ ‘consolidating the ethical discourse of resistance,’ and ‘developing independent narrative networks.'” He clarified that “confronting the Western discourse is not possible merely by negating it; rather, it requires the creation of new meanings rooted in the lived experiences of independent nations.” According to him, centers such as the Hoover Institution, E-International Relations (E-IR), and Responsible Statecraft have also acknowledged, in recent analyses, the West’s inability to control public opinion after the Ukraine and Gaza crises. In these reports, even Western experts have emphasized that the discourse of resistance is becoming a global framework for expressing protest against Western media and political dominance.

He noted that “Iran can exploit the opportunity created by the gaps in Western narratives by strengthening media and cultural diplomacy. Producing artistic works, documentaries, multilingual podcasts, and supporting international research on global justice are part of this strategy.” He added that “the discourse of resistance must be moved beyond a purely political framework and expanded into humanitarian, environmental, and cultural spheres to increase global empathy with this discourse.” In Nikfar’s belief, “effective discourse-building is achieved when, instead of sporadic reactions, a continuous roadmap is formed alongside the creation of a network of aligned elites, journalists, and media activists at the regional and global levels. This network must actively operate not only against media attacks but also against distorted representations of Iranian and Islamic culture.”

Youth and Cyberspace: The New Arena of Discursive Battle
The strategic studies researcher “considered the role of youth and cyberspace decisive in recent cultural developments” and said: “If in past decades, media warfare was conducted via satellite and television, today it takes place on social networks and digital platforms. The new generation in Iran, with high media literacy and a quick understanding of global trends, can become the most significant actor in the discursive battle.” He noted that “the experience of Iranian users in narrating the realities of the Gaza war in real-time was an example of breaking the Western media monopoly. These spontaneous public narratives were able to attract millions of international audiences in a short time, and even some independent Western journalists used them as sources.”

He clarified that “the government and cultural institutions should move towards empowering and supporting youth in producing meaningful content instead of mere control. Enemies and competitors also use this same digital platform to distort realities and construct deviant narratives; therefore, active and purposeful presence in cyberspace is not an option but a strategic necessity.” Nikfar added that “for the discourse of resistance to endure, it must understand the language of the new generation and utilize creative formats such as motion graphics, digital games, and short narratives. Today’s youth desire meaning and authenticity more than ever before, and if this need is met within the framework of the discourse of justice-seeking and human dignity, they themselves will become its active promoters.”

The expert emphasized that “the future of the discursive battle will be determined not on the battlefield, but in minds and networks, and Iran, with its cultural and civilizational background, has the capacity to emerge from this arena not only as an actor but as an inspiring reference in defense of truth and justice.”

SCFR Online–Opinion: By providing an extensive network of social, healthcare, educational, and post-war reconstruction services, Hezbollah has established a strong social base for itself among Lebanon’s Shiites and Sunnis, and even beyond that, among other segments of Lebanese society, including Christians.
